Since its inception in 1929, The Museum of Modern Art has been ever-changing. And it continues to grow: In October, the museum will reopen its doors with an additional 40,000 square feet of gallery space. Architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro—in collaboration with Gensler—designed the $400 million project, which aims to shift focus from discipline-specific galleries to a more thematic approach. The Marie-Josée and Henry Kravis Studio will feature live programming and performances, while the Paula and James Crown Platform will offer an area for experimental exploration. MoMA visitors will still enjoy favorites like The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh, but they’ll also be exposed to artists who aren’t as well known. Opening exhibitions include “Sur moderno: Journeys of Abstraction―The Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Gift,” which offers a deeper look at the museum’s Latin American art; and “Betye Saar: The Legends of Black Girl’s Window,” featuring the artist’s rare, early
prints from the 1960s, among others.
